Earning useful backlinks

Create a reason for someone to cite your work.

Start with the destination

A useful link points to something worth visiting: original research, a tool, a clear explanation or a first-hand account. Improve the page before promoting it. A directory listing can help discovery when the audience fits, but buying hundreds of links is not a substitute for that fit.

A practical approach

Find articles that genuinely discuss your topic. Offer the author a specific correction, dataset or resource that helps the reader. Keep outreach personal and let the editor decide. Track referral traffic and qualified customers alongside search visibility.

What changed in this guide

The old page treated backlinks as the foundation of SEO and referred to a 2024 leak. This edition uses Google’s published guidance: buying links for ranking, excessive exchanges and automated link creation are examples of link spam. Paid advertising links should be qualified. No single link count guarantees a ranking.
