The idea
AppSumo is a marketplace for software offers, including lifetime deals. For a maker, it can bring early customers and cash; for a buyer, the value depends on the exact product, limits, update policy and continued operation of the service. Review the specific deal and partner terms rather than assuming every listing follows the same arrangement.
What founders found
Mailmeteor’s Jean Dubrulle reported more than 50 sales within days of a 2021 Marketplace launch, mostly to existing AppSumo buyers. Heyzine’s Albert later published a more detailed retrospective: $80,000 in gross sales and $60,000 after the platform share across 15 months. His case also described refunds, support, and a small group of heavy users driving much of the cost. These are historical founder reports, not expected returns or current commission schedules.
How to use it
Before launching, write down a maximum number of lifetime accounts, usage limits, a support budget and what happens when the promotion closes. Follow actual activation as well as sales: an unused account and an expensive power user create very different economics. A successful campaign should leave enough resources to keep serving the customers after the launch revenue ends.
