The idea
A lifetime deal exchanges one payment today for the access specified in the offer. It can finance an early product without selling equity, but it also creates a future service obligation. The word lifetime alone does not explain usage limits, included features, upgrades or what happens if the product closes.
What founders found
Estimate contribution per account: money received after fees and refunds, minus the cost of serving and supporting that account over time. For AI products, model different usage levels rather than assuming a typical customer. An average can hide the small group that creates most of the bill. Decide which upgrades are included before selling, and make the limits visible.
How to use it
Founders’ experiences differ. Mailmeteor found existing AppSumo buyers quickly; Heyzine’s retrospective stresses tracking support, infrastructure costs and dependence on campaign revenue. A one-time campaign can be useful without becoming the permanent pricing model. Preserve a way to fund future development after the promotion closes.
